Explicit Canadian workplace safety ads pulled from TV due to Christmas season

Thursday, December 13, 2007

Controversial and explicit Canadian workplace safety ads have been pulled from television, and paper ads from some bus shelters for the Christmas season. However, the ads will return to air in January.

“It’s totally erroneous to suggest we’re pulling anything,” chairman of the Workplace Safety and Information Board of Ontario, Steve Mahoney said. “Our plan from Day 1 was to stop the ads around the middle of December when most of the advertising that’s in the media is focused on Christmas and purchasing gifts. We just didn’t want to be competing with all that stuff.”

In one of the TV ads a woman accidentally slips on grease on the floor and a large steaming pot falls onto her face, and she starts screaming to death. The ads end with the message “There really are no accidents”.

A paper ads shows a construction worker who is in a pool of blood with a forklift operation manual stuck in his chest. Another with a man who is slit by a “Danger” sign with his leg stuck in a machine. They show the messages: “Lack of training can kill” and the other “Ignoring safety procedures can kill”.

“The critics amount to about 25 per cent rating, and I’m delighted they’re upset about the ads because I wouldn’t want anyone to enjoy watching them.”

The videos have been viewed more than 70,000 times on the Board’s website and are gaining large amounts of views on YouTube.

The transit authorities of Hamilton and Mississauga will show modified advertisements. The transit authority of Guelph will show the ads in bus shelters, but the transit authority of Windsor will not because of the graphic nature.

“We’re not against workplace safety, but this is too graphic,” said Caroline Postma, chair of the Transit Windsor board.

Mississauga city councillour Carolyn Parrish said: “My son-in-law was telling me that they shouldn’t be on in prime time because when [my grandson] watches them he just about bursts into tear. Now he follows his mom around the kitchen to make sure she doesn’t spill grease. And he’s only four. There’s too much of a chance that … people are really badly affected by it, and can’t really do anything about it anyway.” She suggested the ads only be aired to workers with the jobs shown in the commercials.

Mahoney changed the earlier promise to air the ads only after 8:00pm to after 9:00pm at last nights meeting with Mississauga city council.

Mahoney said the commercials and paper ads are not “too graphic at all”. And they are “absolutely appropriate and they’re doing what they’re intended to do, they’re creating what I call a water cooler topic of conversation.”

Ninety-eight Canadian workers so far have been killed on the job this year.

Pirates seize tourist yacht near Seychelles, troops deployed

Thursday, April 2, 2009

According to officials, Somali pirates have seized a luxury boat named the Ocean Explorer off the coast of the Seychelles archipelago in the Indian Ocean. Seven Seychellois crew members are believed to be on board. The boat is thought to be headed for Somalia.

Patrick Pillay, the Foreign Affairs Minister, said that the Seychelles government had contacted local naval forces who had pledged to “track down the boat.”

“The Indian Ocean Explorer has been seized by pirates about 600 miles west of the capital. What I’ve been told is they believe this has been taken to the Somali coast,” said Fergus Cochrane-Dyet, the British High Commissioner the Seychelles.

“As far as we know there were no foreign nationals on board. The vast majority of tourists come to the inner island resorts but a small number are more intrepid and visit the outer islands. I believe this yacht was used for visiting Aldabra,” she said.

This is not the first time Somali pirates have frequented the area: the Seychelles police chief stated that pirates held hostage three Seychellois sailors after their catamaran was hijacked in February.

Somali pirates, usually looking for a ransom, attacked over 130 merchant ships in the area in 2008. The International Maritime Bureau reports that number of attacks has increased by over 200% since 2007.

Member Care Tips: Sensual Activity Around The House}

Member Care Tips: Sensual Activity Around the House

by

John Dugan

Although there are many aspects involved in proper member care, its a big plus that one of the most important is making sure the member sees an appropriate amount of sensual activity. As with many things in life, member care has a use it or lose it aspect; the manhood needs to be kept in shape through practice, whether with alone or with a partner. And, indeed, studies have shown that men who have frequent seed releases have a decreased risk of prostate cancer in later life, another bonus of good member care. And to enliven the sensual activity that the male organ requires, couples may want to think a little outside the box or the bedroom and consider coupling in other parts of the house.

With that in mind, the following tips are offered for those anxious to indulge themselves all around the house.

The living room

According to one survey, next to the bedroom, the living room is the most popular place in the house for sensual activity. And why not? A sofa is a good substitute for a bed, after all. But there can be other advantages to the living room. For example, if it contains a fireplace, coupling next to a roaring fire can be intense. Rugs, pillows, ottomans and foot stools can be arranged on the floor to help accommodate exploration of positions that require greater flexibility and bendability, as well as extra support. Take advantage of what the living room has to offer to try new things with a partner.

The bathroom

The bathroom followed the living room on the aforementioned survey of hot places for coupling other than the bedroom and thats because of the shower. Engaging in sensual activity in the shower is a very different experience, and its often a good way for a couple who feels theyve fallen into a sensual rut to break out. However, its important to remember that coupling in the shower can be dangerous, due to slipperiness and difficulty maintaining balance, Rather than focus on standing up, penetrative sensual activity, many couples find that the shower is a great place for oral and manual sensual activities.

The garage

Umm, coupling in a greasy garage? Not everyones cup of tea. But coupling inside a car in the garage is another story. Its an excellent way to relive the thrill of secretive teen-age sensual activity, but from the safety and privacy of a couples own private garage.

The laundry room

Surprisingly, laundry rooms are very popular for coupling. The main reason for this is the vibrations the washer or dryer make. Lay a blanket on top, arrange a pillow against the wall for comfort and set the machine on high. It may take some adjusting to find a comfortable position, and depending on how high the machine is, the man may need to stand on a sturdy ottoman. But the results can be revelatory.

The kitchen

Take advantage of the contents of the kitchen to make sensual activity especially tantalizing. Partners can apply whipped cream, honey, jelly, mustard, and other food stuffs to various body parts and then have fun satisfying their cravings (both culinary and sensual). Just be sure to clean up the kitchen when through!

Advancing member care through frequent sensual activity is excellent, but a man still needs to do more, such as regularly apply a superior male organ health crme (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil, which is clinically proven mild and safe for skin) to his member. The best crmes are those which include a wide range of vitamins, especially A, B5, C, D and E. But the crme should also include L-arginine, a valuable amino acid which is part of the process whereby male organ blood vessels open and expand to receive the increased flow of blood that occurs during the tumescence process.

Australia: Victorian government to trial driverless vehicles on public roads

Saturday, August 12, 2017

Yesterday, the state government of Victoria, Australia announced their decision to trial self-driving vehicles on two of the state’s major connecting motorways, the CityLink and Tullamarine Freeway. The trial is to use autonomous vehicles from automobile companies including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Tesla. The two-year trial is to have three phases.

The cars are to drive alongside commuters, but in public testing a driver is always to be present, as Victorian law requires drivers always keep a hand on the steering wheel. However, in occasional closures of the Burnley Tunnel, with no other drivers to endanger, the cars are to be tested with nobody in the vehicle.

Lane assist, cruise control, and recognition of traffic signs are in the trial’s first phase, expected to complete before the end of the year. This includes monitoring how the driver-less cars respond to road conditions, including lane markings and electronic speed signs.

“Victoria is at the forefront of automated vehicle technology — we’re investing in this trial to explore ways that this technology can be used to reduce crashes and keep people safe on our roads”, said Luke Donnellan, the Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety. He noted, “Ninety per cent of the fault of accidents is human error […] so we know that if we can take out human error we will have less accidents”.

Tim Hansen, Victoria Police’s Acting Assistant Commissioner, said that police had founded a project team to investigate how self-driving vehicles would change policing on roads. “Can we intercept vehicles more safely to avoid pursuits and ramming?”, he asked.

The trial is a partnership between the state government, Victoria’s road management authority VicRoads, owner of the CityLink toll road Transurban, and insurance company RACV.

DFB-Pokal Final: Bayern wins 4-3 in Der Klassiker final

Monday, May 23, 2016

In the German DFB-Pokal final, on Saturday, Munich-based football club FC Bayern Munich defeated rivals Borussia Dortmund 4–3 in a penalty shoot-out decider as the match ended 0–0 after 120 minutes at Olympiastadion in Berlin. This marked the third consecutive loss for Dortmund in the German Cup final. This was the eighteenth German Cup win for Bayern and eleventh domestic double.

Once you’ve reached five finals over the course of five years, simply reaching the final is no longer enough!

Bundesliga winners Bayern Munich had 70% ball possession in the game and had seventeen shots while Dortmund hit just nine. With a total of seven yellow cards shown in 120 minutes, 35 fouls were committed.

Dominating Bayern faced a shot from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang which was saved in the 85th minute. Erik Durm’s sliding tackle saved a goal for Robert Lewandowski’s shot in the fourth minute of the extra time.

As normal time ended goal-less, the match progressed to additional time. Roman Bürki delayed the Bavarian victory by disallowing Douglas Costa’s 113th minute shot as well as David Alaba’s shot in the next minute.

In the penalty shootout, Manuel Neuer saved Sven Bender’s spot kick, and Sokratis Papastathopoulos missed while Joshua Kimmich failed to score for Munich.

In the end, Munich won the cup defeating their rivals 4–3 on penalties. This match was the last match for Dortmund for their captain Mats Hummels as he is due to move to Munich next week.

In a pre-match conference, Thomas Tuchel, Borussia Manager, said, “Once you’ve reached five finals over the course of five years, simply reaching the final is no longer enough!” ((de)) German Language: Wenn man fünf Mal in fünf Jahren in einem Endspiel steht, ist eine Final-Teilnahme nicht mehr genug!

Dortmund has won the DFB-Pokal three times. Including the 2012, 2014 and 2015 DFB-Pokal finals they have featured in five finals in the last five seasons in various competitions including the 2013 UEFA Champions League Der Klassiker final. This was Pep Guardiola’s seventh trophy with Bayern Munich in his three years as the club manager. He won the Bundesliga title each season and he is set to join Manchester City next season.

Net skills to be taught by kids

Saturday, September 24, 2005

Young people (mainly children) are being encouraged to take the role of “Internet trainer” in order to help teach Internet literacy skills to older people. On 24 September Grandparents Day is celebrated in the United Kingdom, and BT Group plc is marking this Grandparents Day by trying to persuade children to teach their grandparents how to use “the Net”. This effort is being made to help prevent grandparents from becoming “digitally excluded”.

A web site, Internet Rangers, by BT, was recently launched with tools, activities and advice to assist children with helping their grandparents make use of one of the world’s largest information resource, the Internet. The site links to BT’s “Green X Code” of conduct which encourages kids to stay safe while accessing the Internet.

BT is working with governments and other commercial organisations to help provide Internet access to people who are currently unable to get access. Recent research shows that teenagers aged between 13 and 16 have been encouraging their parents and grandparents to “surf the Net”.

By the year 2025, around 23 million adults could miss out on what the Internet has to offer, according to BT.

Luis Enrique wins 2015 FIFA World Coach of the Year

Thursday, January 14, 2016

On Monday, Luis Enrique won the 2015 FIFA World Coach of the Year in Zürich, Switzerland.

In his first year as manager of FC Barcelona, Enrique won five trophies, including the 2015 FIFA Club World Cup. The other finalists were Pep Guardiola, a former Barcelona coach and current manager of the German giants Bayern Munich, and Argentine Jorge Sampaoli, the coach of Chile’s national football team.

The staff, the president, the board, the fans and our players. This is an incredible dream team that has pushed us forward.

Guardiola led Bayern to the Bundesliga title and under Sampoli, Chile won their first ever-Copa América, defeating Argentina 4–1 on penalties. Enrique won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the UEFA Champions League — just the second time the club has won that treble — the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. Barcelona also defeated their arch-rivals Real Madrid 4–0 in November.

Barcelona technical secretary Robert Fernandez attended the ceremony and collected the award on behalf of Enrique, who did not attend the function. Fernandez said “It must have been a very difficult choice because the other candidates [are of] very, very high quality,”. He also added that Enrique wanted to share the award with all those people who “who have supported him in difficult times and good times. The staff, the president, the board, the fans and our players. This is an incredible dream team that has pushed us forward.”

Earlier in the ceremony, Jill Ellis, who coached the United States’s women’s football team to win the World Cup, was announced as the FIFA Football Women’s Coach of the year.

Telephone network access on iPhone unlocked by teen

Friday, August 24, 2007

George Hotz, 17, confirmed on Friday that he has cracked the lock that joins the Apple iPhone to AT&T‘s wireless network and was using it on T-Mobile‘s network—the only other major U.S. carrier compatible with iPhone technology. This crack opens up the phone, which is only being sold in the U.S., to use on overseas networks. “That’s the big thing,” said Hotz.

Hotz posted the complicated hack, which requires skill with both soldering and software and takes about two hours to perform, to his blog Thursday. He collaborated over the Internet with four other people, including two Russians, to develop the unlocking process that leaves all iPhone functions intact, with the exception of the “visual voicemail” feature.

With the hack available to the public, there is the possibility that some will buy U.S. iPhones, unlock them and send them overseas for profit. “That’s exactly […] what I don’t want,” Hotz said. “I don’t want people making money off this.”

Hotz said he wished he could have made the instructions so that users could modify the phones themselves. “But that’s the simplest I could make them.”

AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel said the company has “no comment” and referred questions to Apple.

A second phone, which was also hacked by Hotz, was placed for sale on eBay. He states at the auction site “Soon, you will be able to buy unlocked iPhones everywhere, in fact probably before this auction ends. But this is the one that started it all. The one unlocked while the steps were posted live on the blog. This isn’t just an unlocked iPhone, this is a piece of history.” Starting at $540, bids reached $99,999,999, although many bids were canceled as fraudulent. Before their removal, Hotz commented on the excessive bids, stating “I’m sure these most recent bids are fake.” The auction was canceled early by Hotz due to “an error in the listing”.
